Dragging to the Fire tells the seasonal tale of branding on ranches across the west. Typically in the spring after calving is done, cattlemen must brand the calves. This job marks a tradition going back centuries. The brand is a mark of ownership of the livestock and a means to identify and deter theft of the cattle. The cowboy ropes the hind legs of the calf and drags the calves into the processing area where they are branded and vaccinated before being turned back to their mothers. It takes a skillful hand with a rope and a well trained horse.
