• Sego Lilies are native wild flowers found in a number of the western states. Thought to be sacred to many Native Americans. The word Sego is thought to mean edible bulb.  The plant thrives in the arid, desert-like regions.

Taking campers and hunters into the wilderness area requires pack horses, riders, work and time. Some will hike in, but packing in allows the visitors to bring gear and stay in a well tended camp.  My husband worked for an outfitter in the White River National Forrest – beautiful, pristine country.  Here he heads into camp – the Smith Jones camp with empty packs and riding horses to bring a set of guests out.  I feel fortunate to have been able to spend time with him doing this.

Each spring crews of sheep shearers migrate across the west. Their work is hard and demanding yet so important for sheep industry. These shearers often start shearing at a young age and travel across the world  – it’s a hard life, but they get to see lots of country, meet interesting people and see untold numbers of sheep.  These are the industry’s unsung heroes.

Sheep run on the open range in the west are typically a white-faced wool breed. Used for hardiness, meat and mothering ability these ladies survive rugged climates and easily handle the migratory life of the range flocks. Merino Rambouillet, Targhee and Columbia are often the breeds found on the big range operations.

Those that have owned and worked Border Collies know the look.  Aged by years and miles, their body doesn’t work quite as well as it once did, but the will to work remains untouched as they eagerly embrace the next task that comes their way.  Waiting at the barn door, or for the cue to be sent, these dogs are always ready to go.  Yes, the ears may not set as straight as they once did, but those clouded eyes speak volumes about character, wisdom and that special quality that makes a working Border Collie.

Something we’ve tried to give our children is the appreciation of nature – to notice the movement of a spring breeze or to feel the quiet waters of a high mountain lake. Each in their own way have grown to embrace the gifts of spending time out of doors. No words can describe the feeling of knowing you’ve become one with nature, fully immersed in the stillness of it all. I hope we’ve succeeded.

We have avid fishermen (women) in our family and the young ones are learning. The boys tie flies and they love to try them out on the water.
